Hiking

  • Pinhoti Trail: 100+ mile trail from Weogulfga, AL to Blue Ridge, GA. Includes road sections as well as wooded sections. See website for complete trails details.
  • Heflin Spur: Branching from the 350 mile Pinhoti National Recreation Trail, the Heflin Spur of the Pinhoti Trail is a 3.5 mile extension that highlights the natural and cultural heritage of the Southern Appalachians, Cleburne County and the City of Heflin. The spur was designated in 2018 by the US Forest Service. Starting at Heflin City Hall you have access to information about the city, and all it has to offer to hikers and those wanting to experience the great outdoors. Near city hall is a variety of shops and businesses that can be enjoyed.

Biking

  • Cheaha State Park: 10+ mile Mountain Bike trail and several miles of hiking trails throughout the park.
  • The Chief Ladiga Trail: The Chief Ladiga Trail is Alabama’s first rails-to-trails project. The 33-mile trail stretches from the Alabama-Georgia state line to Anniston. The Chief Ladiga is on the same rail corridor as the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia. With the Chief Ladiga and the Silver Comet trails connected, there is a 90-mile corridor available for non-motorized travel from just west of Atlanta, Georgia to Anniston, Alabama.

Walking

  • Ranburne Recreational Trail: 1/2 mile asphalt trail at Ranburne High School accommodating pedestrians and bicycles.
  • Pleasant Grove Community Walking Trail: 1/4 mile walking trail adjacent to the elementary school. AL Hwy 9 just north of Junction with U.S. Hwy 431.
  • Chief Ladiga Walking Trail: 33 mile Rails-to-Trails project from Anniston, AL to the Georgia line where it connects to the Silver Comet Trail in GA. The two combined total 90+ miles.

Fishing

  • Fishing the Upper Tallapoosa River in Alabama: A great opportunity for canoeists and kayakers who wish to float the scenic river, enjoy the aesthetics of the rural area, and possibly try their hand at angling for a few bass and/or bream. The river is home to redeye bass, spotted bass, and largemouth bass, as well as bluegill and redbreast sunfish. You can also catch catfish, both channel catfish and flathead catfish.
  • Terrapin Creek Fishing: Terrapin Creek flows from the Talladega National Forest in Cleburne County through Calhoun and then into Cherokee County. It is an excellent float fishing stream in its lower reaches from County Road 8 bridge, ¾ of a mile west of Hwy 9 north of Piedmont, AL, to the County Road 71 bridge before the creek empties into the old Coosa River channel.
  • Coleman Lake: The newly renovated Coleman Lake Recreation Area is peacefully nestled into the Talladega Mountains. For recreationists who want to get away from the crowds, but want a few modern conveniences, Coleman Lake Recreation Area is your place to be.

Canoe/Kayak

  • Loyd Owen’s Canoe Trail: Canoe Trail in the Upper Tallappoosa headwater region to the backwater of Lake Harris.
  • Terrapin Creek: A nice moving water float through pasture land in east Alabama. At 650 cfs, the water moves nicely for at least half of the run. Offers a few riffles and one class I/II rapid towards the end. This is a very nice family float or introductory run for those looking for moving water practice or a place to work on their roll. Terrapin will hold water longer than most runs due to watershed lakes in its headwaters. Terrapin Outdoor Center features a large selection of canoes, kayaks, and gear. They will also run your shuttle for you for a fee.
  • Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Center: Prepare for a scenic paddle journey on the Lloyd Owens Canoe Trail, covering the Upper Tallapoosa River. With Tallapoosa River Outdoor Center, embark on a 7-mile adventure that concludes right at our outfitter shop, all in just half a day. Hunting

  • Wildlife Management Area Maps and Hunting Permits: Maps with hunting permits for individual Wildlife Management Areas are available for downloading and printing from this website. Permits for most gun deer hunts will continue to be issued at check stations on the days of the hunts and will not be available electronically.

Archery

  • Heflin Community Archery Park: The Heflin Community Archery Park was developed through a partnership between the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Archery Trade Association and the City of Heflin.

Disc Golf

  • Lake Point Disc Golf: The course is surrounded by gorgeous woodlands and breathtaking views of the mountains and lake. Lake Point features a permanent course type with 18 holes consisting of 4955 feet to 5955 feet. The landscape of the course features beautiful but moderately hills and wooded areas. More info here.
